Illustrator in Marseille (FR)
In Maxime's work, the image burrows into the paper itself, as though a printmaker had traded acid for graphite. Trained at the Beaux-Arts of Cambrai and Rennes, the French artist-illustrator has spent over a decade refining a technique he pioneered: paper engraving drawn entirely with graphite, yielding a vocabulary of velvety blacks and spectral greys. His quiet yet resonant marks now live in the pages of Libération, Le Monde, and Le Temps, and converse with contemporary authors, from Joël Jouanneau at Actes Sud-Papiers to the catalogues of Vanloo, Le Typhon, and Vies Parallèles. Winner of Fotokino’s 2019 award for his youth-workshop project “Dessine-grave,” Maxime extends the same alchemy of line and imprint to young audiences, revealing the tactile poetry of inkless print. Because for Maxime, an image is never just laid onto a page, it is embedded, like memory itself, leaving a trace that lingers long after the paper is turned.
